Launch of Considerati Insight Lab series

26/11/2024 - Considerati’s office in Brussels inaugurated this past Friday, 22 November the Considerati Insight Lab series with a first episode: What's next for (Bio-)tech and biosecurity? EU & US post-election landscape.

Considerati Insight Lab brings together distinguished experts to decode critical policy developments that have societal impact in health, tech, and security. Through focused hybrid sessions, we deliver actionable insights on regulations shaping our future.

The first episode focused on Biotechnology and Biosecurity regulatory developments, bringing together leading voices from both sides of the Atlantic at a pivotal moment post US election and ahead of a new European Commission mandate. The webinar recording is available here: view recording.

The inaugural session convened an exceptional panel of experts:

  • Melissa Hopkins, JD - Health Security Policy Advisor at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security
  • Vlad Olteanu, Healthcare Public Affairs Director at EuropaBio
  • Sophie Peresson, Sciences Po Professor and Member of the OECD Synthetic Biotechnologies Working Group and European Synthetic Biology Advisory Board
  • Doru Frantescu, CEO of EU Matrix

The dynamic discussion, which attracted an international audience, examined the evolving regulatory landscape at a critical juncture: the incoming Trump’s administration's agenda converges with the EU's newly announced 'Biotech Act', which will be under the stewardship of Commissioner-designate for Health and Animal Welfare, Olivér Várhelyi.

The webinar provided comprehensive insights into emerging regulatory frameworks, with particular focus on the UK's innovative anticipatory governance model and the OECD's coordinating role in shaping international standards.

Key strategic insights:

  • Geopolitical dynamics: The intensifying U.S.-China relationship could impact global biotech and biosecurity policy, with competitiveness considerations significantly set to influence evolving regulatory frameworks
  • Safety frameworks: It was emphasized that sustainable biotechnology innovation and competitiveness fundamentally depend on robust biosafety and biosecurity measures, particularly with emerging domains like AI and synthetic biology
  • Regulatory harmonization: Stakeholders emphasized the urgent need for coordinated global approaches, highlighting the importance of collaborative assessment mechanisms and shared policy vision
  • Multistakeholder approach: Participants underscored that successful biotechnology development requires meaningful engagement across civil society, academia, industry, and policy spheres
  • EU leadership opportunity: The discussion highlighted the strategic importance of swift progress on the EU Biotech Act to establish clear regulatory parameters

The success of this inaugural Insight Lab sets the stage for future sessions exploring critical regulatory developments at the intersection of emergent technologies and policymaking. Stay tuned for announcements about our next episodes.
