Considerati has been awarded with the ‘Privacy Innovation Award’ by the IAPP (International Association of Privacy Professionals) for its online platform PrivacyChecker.eu. Each year, the prize is awarded to organisations that use technology to stimulate privacy and data protection in an innovative way. Considerati’s Privacychecker.eu provides tools for public and private organisations to gain insight into their level of privacy compliance.
The judges of the HP-IAPP Awards awarded Considerati with the Privacy Innovation Award in the category ‘technological innovation’, because “PrivacyChecker.eu uses technology in an innovative way to make complex privacy legislation tangible for private and public organisations”. Existing privacy legislation is complex and the upcoming European Privacy Regulation has many public and private organisations worried. In the Regulation rules will be stricter, fines will be higher and new rights and obligations will be introduced. This complexity and uncertainty in legislation was the reason for Considerati to develop PrivacyChecker.eu. The web tool PrivacyChecker.eu addresses both existing and upcoming European privacy legislation through a Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) Quickscan, a Data Protection Quickscan and a Fine-O-Meter.
“Considerati is committed to providing practical, workable solutions to complex legislative issues such as privacy. PrivacyChecker.eu was developed to help organisations identify and avoid privacy related issues,” says Bart Schermer, partner at Considerati and assistant-professor internet law at Leiden University. “We support notions of responsibility and accountability, but feel that such notions do not have to be a roadblock for the economic interest of organisations. Both organisations and citizens can benefit from digital data processing, and this depends on the level of trust citizens put in organisations regarding their privacy. Digital trust starts with compliance, but can increase through other measures. We support organisations in building this trust, for example through Privacychecker.eu.”
