An essay on the practice of automatic domain name claiming, i.e. drop catching: a lucrative business. The essay elaborates on the question whether drop catching is socially undesirable and, if so, whether an alternative system could be adopted for assigning domain names at the end of their quarantine period, e.g. auctioning or drawing lots? If the ‘first-come, first-served’ principle is retained, should measures be put in place to make drop catching more difficult and thus to improve the opportunities for other prospective registrants? Publication for SIDN, the registry of the Dutch .nl top level domain, August 2012.
