Hielke Hijmans is of counsel for Considerati. He is a widely recognised specialist in EU law and privacy law who also authored numerous academic works, with a focus on the rule of law, democracy and fundamental rights. He also works as an independent advisor and is based in Brussels. He holds a double doctorate in law at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels and the University of Amsterdam after, in February 2016, successfully defending his doctorate thesis, entitled: “The European Union as a constitutional guardian of internet privacy and data protection: the story of Article 16 TFEU.”
He is Member of the Meijers Committee (an independent group of experts that researches and advises on European criminal, migration, refugee, privacy, non-discrimination and constitutional law) and is Senior Policy Advisor to the Hunton & Williams LLP’s Centre for Information Policy Leadership (CIPL), an eminent global privacy and security policy think tank located in Washington, DC, London and Brussels. Hielke served for 12 years at the Offices of the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), e.g. as Head of Unit Policy & Consultations.
Before joining the EDPS, he was Member of the Cabinet of Advocate-General Geelhoed at the Court of Justice of the EU in Luxembourg and Counsellor at the Directorate of Legislation of the Ministry of Justice in The Hague.
